Stringing Up the Mathews VXR 31.5

If you read my last post, you know that a couple months ago I made the switch to a Mathews VXR 31.5 compound bow. After adding all of my accessories, I waited for my new strings from Piranha Bowstrings to arrive before I fine tuned anything. When they arrived, I made some calls to get the strings installed. The pro shop I called had previously given a quote to a buddy for $150 to install the strings. When I called (and they are a Mathews dealer) they quoted $100 and another $50 for the tuning adjustments. Like it or not, that’s a steep price to simply install strings and cables. Normally, most shops I’ve dealt with charge around $60, but businesses need to do what they can. Fortunately for me, I was blessed to have fellow archer and bowhunter, Brian Klebowski, reach out and offer to help me get set up properly. We made a plan to meet up last Friday afternoon and get to work.

After a few pleasantries Brian got right to work. What do I like about Brian? He’s meticulous, patient, explains what he’s doing, why he’s doing it, and makes sure you are paying attention. The new strings and cables went on without a hitch, and we only had t make a couple slight adjustments along the way.

After verifying timing and draw weight of 72# on the draw board, Brian and I spent some time shooting through paper to get as close as we could to a bullet hole. We didn’t want to burn the entire evening with it because I decided to move up to a .300 spine Victory arrow and not cut them as short this time. Overall, the bow shoots fast (I will chrono it this weekend), is very quiet, and is by far the smoothest shooting bow I have shot in 36 years of archery. I absolutely love the VXR.

Without a doubt, I owe a major thank you to Brian for spending as much time as he did on a Friday night to help me out. He didn’t have to, but he likes helping others and he’s good at what he does. Cheers Brian for a great evening of conversation, a string/cable changing learning experience resulting in a bow that that shoots like a dream. One more thing to mention is it was nice for someone else to check out my form. I had a slight issue that I knew I had, but didn’t know exactly what I was doing to make it happen. Brian figured it out in seconds and now I’m shooting consistently accurate.

The weekend is here and time to dial in my new HHA Tetra sight with my newly built Victory RIP ELITE arrows. I’ll share more details in the next few days regarding arrow set up and how the bow is performing, but for now it’s now time for me to grab my bow and go shoot!
