With my Remington 700 VTR .308 rifle rebuild complete, I needed to get out to the range. Dialing it in at 200 yards was my goal and I wanted to be sure everything functioned properly on the rifle. We were able to get set up rather quickly and I opted to challenge myself by not using a shooting bench. Instead, I opted to use the Bog Hunt Deathgrip to hold my rifle. Yeah, yeah, it would have been better to use the bench, but it’s my rifle, my challenge, and my hand loads. I really don’t mind working up different loads and challenging myself.
My .308 hand loads consisted of brand new Hornady brass (resized and trimmed to spec), 165 gr. Speer and Sierra projectiles, and different charges (41-44 gr.) of Shooter’s World Precision powder.
I bore sighted the rifle and adjusted my scope for the 200 yards targets. It’s not my first rodeo, so I was on paper in two shots. A few minor tweaks and it was off to see which group combo would come out on top. Here are my results:
The rifle shoots very well, handles very well, and even with the Cerakoting in the action the bolt cycles extremely well. Overall, I am very happy with how this rebuild turned out and I am eager to get back out to the range for some more shooting!
Hello,
It has been too long since I treated myself to reading your blog. When I saw the title, I was drawn to read your prose. As I expected, it seems that your rifle performed admirably, and I applaud your decision to not using a shooting bench. Bold. Decisive.
Thank you!
Thanks John! I really enjoyed testing myself. The rifle performed well and with a bit of adjustment on the powder I should be ready to hunt with it in no time.
Do you still have this rifle?
Hi Jose. Yes, I still have the rifle.
